Icy V Logo_edited.png

A series of winter and ice swims aimed at, but not exclusive

to adaptive, disabled and para swimmers.

It is strongly recommended these swims take place at recognised winter and ice swimming venues which have experience in coaching and operating winter and ice swimming programmes, with the appropriate cold conditions rescue teams in place.

IF IN DOUBT DO NOT SWIM.

  • The swimmer must swim five separate, 500m swims, undertaken in 5c or less water temperature.

  • These swims cannot take place on the same day.

  • Swimmers can undertake each swim in a wetsuit or skins or any combination thereof.

  • There is no time limit to complete the swims, or the Icy V challenge.

  • Swims must be witnessed by an observer, preferably independently. â€‹

  • Water temperature must be taken by three thermometers (not laser thermometers) and the average temperature used.

  • Each swimmer is responsible for ensuring they swim in a safe manner and are suitably prepared for the cold / icy conditions.

  • Each swimmer must swim at least one qualifying swim before starting the Icy V. This swim must be signed off by the qualifying observer. This is the absolute minimum, and it is strongly recommended that swimmers swim more acclimatisation swims.

  • Tow floats aren’t mandatory but being able to be seen by other water users is extremely important.

  • A tow float belt must be worn to assist with rescue should it be needed.

  •  All Para V swims have to be reported to Para V on this form with the following information included:

    • Photos of location and entry/exit from the water

    • Total time of each swim

    • Date of each swim

    • Water temperature (Icy V only)

    • Name of observer (s)

    • Use of “What Three Words” is recommended.

  • Swimmers may be accompanied by other swimmers, helpers or their support team but they can not provide assistance with propulsion.

  • Any stroke can be used, including non standard strokes if that is all the swimmers can manage.

  • Flippers are not to be used unless with prior agreement of the Founder.
